Personal Care / Assisted Living
When a senior is no longer able to live safely at home, yet they do not need nor wish to live in a nursing home, assisted living and personal care may be a good choice. These communities provide seniors with 24/7 assistance; helping with all ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living). ADL’s include assistance with ambulation, bathing and showering, grooming, dressing, eating, transferring in and out of a chair and bed, and help in the bathroom. Assisted living and personal care homes also provide three meals a day and manage the residents’ medication, meaning the professional staff works with the senior’s physician to order the proper medication and administers the prescribed medication to the resident. This can be very helpful to seniors who are forgetful or get confused when taking their medication. Individuals struggling to perform these activities independently can receive the help they need in assisted living / personal care.
Another benefit to residing in a senior community is the engagement with others, with their peers and with staff. Many times seniors who live alone may be lonely, depressed and may have little interaction with many other people. This can be very isolating. Living in a senior community provides the opportunity to engage with others by having meals together, structured activity programs and simply talking and being with others. Simple companionship can make a significant positive difference in a senior’s quality of life.
